Elvis's cage is new and improved. My Dad and I spent a good part of Saturday at his shop in KC making a pan/tray to for the foundation for Elle's cage. We made it in a special metal that would accept a paint finish. Now it is Cobalt blue! She essentially gained 5 inches of space in the bottom of her cage and the six inches that wraps around the cage itself. That is a lots of inch-footage for an 8 inch parrot!
With all that space to play down there--she has been eye-balling it with curiosity all weekend. There is lots to consider when the world is so strange and new. We decided to make it an event and pulled for a trip to the pet store where we purchased what Elvis regards as some very strange bedding (later to discover it is fun to chew on and shred), a new fuzzy tent to sleep in, and an interesting new rope ladder.
Most parrots either attack new things or take a long time to warm up to them. Elvis, she will give new things hours, days, even weeks some times before she will explore them. Her new tray has been courageously...um, walked on a couple times. The rope ladder--bitten, shaken, gaffed at. The new bedding, pelted with food. Right now she is feeling things out; it is all so new for a parrot. She did find that the new perch layout is very nice and easy to navigate--it is making the bottom look less scary.
It was so funny at the pet store. We let her check the new stuff out before we bought it, so she was good and territorial before we made it to the check-out. As soon as the check-out girl picks her new treats up from the counter, Elvis started bitching her out. It wasn't too loud, in a "regular" voice. Brenton and I immediately reassured Elvis that is was ok, she would get them back. As soon the clerk handed the bag back over, Elvis gave one final chirp and was quiet. Don't try and take her shit! She is little and she has sass!
